SIBO hydrogen/methane breath test (3-hour lactulose): price comparison

9 listings from 9 sellers, from $235 to $359 including separately listed fees. Last checked Oct 19, 2026.

What it measures

Hydrogen and methane in exhaled breath, collected at intervals after drinking a lactulose solution, to look for bacterial overgrowth in the small intestine (per lab and seller descriptions).

Lab: Mostly Genova Diagnostics (lab varies by seller) · Specimen: Breath samples collected at home over 3 hours after a lactulose drink

Evidence level: Widely used, with known limits

A North American expert consensus (Rezaie et al., Am J Gastroenterol, 2017) describes glucose and lactulose breath tests as the least invasive alternatives to diagnose SIBO, while noting that standardization of indications, methodology and interpretation had been lacking; it proposed standard doses and cut-offs (e.g. a hydrogen rise of ≥20 ppm by 90 minutes; methane ≥10 ppm).

FAQ

Are all SIBO tests the same?

No. Substrate (lactulose vs glucose), duration (2 vs 3 hours) and gases measured differ. This page compares 3-hour lactulose tests; rows note the lab.

Is there preparation?

Yes. Sellers describe a restricted diet the day before and fasting; follow the kit instructions.

Why do prices differ so much?

Sellers set their own prices for the same lab's kit and may bundle practitioner authorization, consultations, shipping or add-ons. The table shows the price and any separately listed fees as posted on each seller's public page on the date checked.

How current are these prices?

All prices were checked on Oct 19, 2026. Prices and availability (including state restrictions) change; confirm on the seller's page before ordering.
